The end of July, 2009, I moved to the east coast
of South Florida.
I thought it would be fun to show a comparison
between Kentucky and Florida
using animal photos. One of my favorite activities is hiking and birdwatching.
Thankfully my husband also enjoys these activities and we often spend
one
day each weekend checking out our new area for hikes. I've been getting
lots
of inspiration for new work!
Check
out my new art quilt, Green Heron, by scrolling to the bottom
of the page.
I also have some photos I used for reference.

Kentucky

Here I am on one
of our weekend hikes at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, FL.

Turtles sharing a log and the sun.
I
have always liked turtles and they have lots of them here.

The
Robins always made their nests under our deck with 2 or 3 hatchings
per summer and at least two nests.
This
provided lots of entertainment out my studio window and an occasional
dive bombing by worried mothers when I went out on the back patio!
I
can't include the coyotes I heard at night in Kentucky in the woods
behind our house or the racoon and her kit who came up on my back deck
to feast from the bird feeder early one Sunday morning.

Here's a luna moth
that was attracted to the lights near
the front door of the Kentucky house.

This little guy is
gorgeous when the sun hits his feathers!
He is called a Purple Gallinule.

And then there are
the Iguanas! This is a big male,
they can get up to 5 feet long. The young ones are green.
They like to sit in
the tops of trees, sunning and they are
very intimidating! Iguanas were introduced from Central America, they
are not native to Florida.

Above is a Wood Stork,
yes the stork is a real bird, not just a fantasy for mom's-to-be! The
wood stork though has a face only his mother could love! They are very
graceful when they fly and big!
Florida
has birds of
all sizes and some very exotic and unusual birds. I couldn't include the
tree full of green parrots in the parking lot of the grocery store that
I saw the first week I was here, but here are some of the photos I have
taken.

Green
Heron
is the latest art quilt I have made. Completed in October, 2009 it was
donated to the Sawgrass Nature Center here in Coral Springs, FL to be
auctioned off at their annual fundraiser.
The
pictures above are some of the ones that I used as a reference for the
quilt. For more details on this piece click on the photo to the left.
